Excellence in medicine is often measured in technical milestones, but leadership is measured in influence. Dr. Myra Adele Logan and Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens redefined what surgical and academic leadership could look like for Black women in the twentieth century.
Dr. Myra Adele Logan earned her MD from New York Medical College in 1933 and trained at Harlem Hospital. In 1943, she became the first African American woman to perform open heart surgery. Her work extended beyond the operating room into research on antibiotics, breast cancer detection, and radiologic techniques for tumor diagnosis. She later became one of the first Black women elected as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Logan’s career demonstrated that clinical excellence and community commitment are not competing priorities.
Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1934 and later completed advanced training at the University of Pennsylvania. Specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, she championed cervical cancer screening and preventive care, emphasizing early intervention as a form of justice. Dickens became an academic leader and mentor who pushed institutions toward more humane and inclusive systems. Together, Logan and Dickens show that leadership in medicine includes surgical skill, prevention strategy, research advancement, and mentorship that opens doors for those coming next.
